Seems military generals have a similar mindset regardless of their culture, religion, or ethnicity! Win the battle at all costs, and do whatever it takes to inspire the troops! The principle here is no different than that used by the general in the Persian-Greek wars, when after landing his forces, greatly outnumbered, he had all his own ships burned so his men knew they had no escape and their only hope was to win the battle ahead of them ... which they did.
